Course intent: To provide speech language pathologists & occupational therapists with the clinical background to understand the clinically relevant issues regarding CPR so as to – by virtue of their front-line entry access into home of very young children – educate, and help prevent occurrence/recurrence by virtue of their role as an early intervention provider providing speech therapy in the home, especially for children with dysphagia in which the occupational therapist or speech therapist is providing feeding therapy. Course is appropriate for all early intervention providers.
Relevance to occupational, speech language pathology, physical therapy & other early intervention providers: Aforementioned disciplines therapists and other early intervention providers treating children between the ages of 3-5 are on the front line of treating children who may be at risk for choking, especially when visiting the home in the pre-school setting and the narrow window of opportunity presents in which CPR can save a life if initiated prior to the arrival of emergency personnel.
Outcomes:
Provider will be able to: fulfill their State obligatory imperative, based upon State education regulations, that all early intervention providers be actively involved in a preventative manner, and be ready to react – via education &/or communication with early intervention service coordinators and officials - in a life-saving manner with respect to the child’s health and safety
Provider will be able to: Identify time-bound window of opportunity to perform CPR on an child so that the early intervention provider can ‘buy-time’ until the arrival of professional emergency personnel
Provider will be able to: Identify the newest 2010 American Medical Association guidelines for providing CPR to children
Provider will be able to: Identify comprehensive application of the knowledge gained via video, reading, and examination materiel so as to competently perform CPR for a needy child
Provider will be able to: initiate and provide single-person two person CPR to children upon successful completion of this course.
Provider will be able to: Identify the legal obligation – based upon the State practice acts of each State defining a professional obligation to be educated with respect to CPR - by therapy providers for children entrusted to their professional care
